This feature detects and automatically blurs images containing nudity, helping users avoid unwanted explicit content. However, to use the feature, you must be signed into a Google Account on the Messages app.

When the app detects a nude image, it blurs the content and offers users several choices. You can learn why nude images can be harmful via a resource page, block the sender’s number, return to the main Messages screen, or decide whether to dismiss or view the image. Viewing the image requires tapping “Next” and then selecting either “No, don’t view” or “Yes, view.” In addition to detecting incoming images, the feature also warns users before sending or forwarding nude pictures. It reminds users of potential risks and requires confirmation before proceeding.
Google designed the Sensitive Content Warnings with privacy in mind. The classification and processing of images happen locally on the device using Android System SafetyCore tools. Google does not receive or store any identifiable data, content, or results related to the feature. Despite its accuracy, the company notes that the tool isn’t perfect. It may occasionally misclassify images by either blurring non-nude images or missing some explicit content.
How Users Can Manage Sensitive Content Warnings
Sensitive Content Warnings are enabled by default for supervised users. Parents and guardians can control this setting through the Family Link app, making it easier to protect children from inappropriate images. For unsupervised teens aged 13 to 17, the feature can be switched off from their Google Account settings if they choose, giving them some control over their messaging experience.
Adult users must opt in to activate the feature. They can enable it by opening Google Messages Settings, then navigating to Protection & Safety > Manage sensitive content warnings > Warnings in Google Messages. This opt-in approach ensures adults have full control over enabling or disabling sensitive content filtering.
